Whatever the job calls for, there will be a lever door handle to suit all kinds of inside doors in a stunning array of attractive designs and styles. Requiring a key to open the door lock, this is the most secure all the lever door handle options that can be used for storerooms and other areas where controlled access is needed.Īgain, when researching the market for a lever door handle set, you'll find a staggering amount of choices to suit any setting or purpose.įor instance, you have traditional styles of door handle like an Elpis Lever in matt black or a Berkley Lever in satin nickel. Our last type of lever door handle is the lever lock, which is frequently combined with a mortice lock to provide security. A lever latch can be used on a bathroom door, so long as a bolt is there to take care of the privacy aspect. If there's no need for the interior door in question to be secured by the door handle, then a lever door latch is sufficient. There is a 'coin slot' on the other side, which can be used for emergency access if required. This particular mechanism will include a thumb turn lock that's locked from the inside of the door. When it comes to a bathroom door, then privacy is something that anyone using it is going to need, whether using the toilet or taking a bath. Lever door handles can be used with a number of different operating mechanisms, with the ideal choice most often being determined by the type of door they're used on. This sub-category of door handles can also be broken down into those that come with a rose and others that come with a backplate. Type #2 - Lever Door HandlesĪlso often referred to as door levers, lever door handles are by far the most common type you'll find being used in interior doors, both in commercial and residential properties. When purchasing any of the door handles mentioned above, you'll also get to choose between a wide range of different styles and finishes.įor example, you could go for a chrome mortice door knob, an antique brass oval design, or even a white ceramic option with a floral pattern. You'll also find this type of doorknob being used on internal doors, cabinet doors and other types of furniture like wardrobes and cupboards. All you get is something to pull in order to open and close the door. There's no real point in rotating this particular type of door handle, as it's not connected to any lock or turning mechanism. When the main requirement is aesthetics and a basic open-close function, then a dummy door knob can be the ideal choice. The door knob still needs to be turned to open the door in question and will typically also feature a latch. When privacy isn't an issue, passage door knobs are a suitable option and can usually be found on doors that line hallways and that allow access to connecting rooms. They're also able to be opened from the outside if the person inside experiences an emergency. With a twist lock that can only be operated from one side, privacy door knobs are popular for use on toilet doors, bathroom doors, and bedroom doors. That said, they can also be used decoratively, with a range of different types existing in this sub-category of door handles that includes the following: Key Entry Door Knobsįeaturing a key-operated lock mechanism that can be accessed from both sides, this option is ideal for rooms that need to be kept secure, such as offices and storerooms. Typically designed with a circular handle, door knobs need to be rotated in either direction for the door they're installed in, to either open or close.Įmployed primarily internally, in bathroom doors and other connecting internal doors, door knobs are often chosen as an alternative to lever varieties. So, in this blog, we'll be covering the three main varieties: To help you in this regard, here we're going to be detailing the types of door handles that exist and the other considerations that need to be made. Of course, you're likely to have doorknobs and door handles in place already that you'd like to replace, but that doesn't necessarily mean that like-for-like substitution will work. Looking online for types of door handles can be a little overwhelming, not least because of the sheer amount of choice available. While internal door handles may not be the first thing you think about, they're as essential to the project as any other component. Whether you're renovating a residential home or office, you'll need a wide array of products to get the job done. Twig blights could subsist by drawing nutrients from the ground through their roots, but vastly preferred to feast on blood. Behavior Īlthough twig blights were independent creatures, most of them were directly controlled by a Gulthias tree. They could see up to 60 feet (18.2 meters) in front of them, but were blind to anything beyond that radius. Twig blights were very dry, causing them to be especially susceptible to fire. Groups of rooted twig blights could resemble piles of firewood or debris. They could root themselves in soil, becoming indistinguishable from regular, dead shrubs. If there is a monster you would like me to focus on for the next Random Encounter segment, please put the suggestion in the comments :).Twig blights were the smallest type of blights, resembling humanoid, leafless shrubs, complete with limbs and a head. Have you used Twig Blights in your own games, or faced them before? What are your thoughts on them? Well that is all I have to say about Twig Blights. You can supplement Twig Blights by also using Vine and Needles Blights, allowing some nice variety for an early adventure. A few Twig Blights utilized well as in a early adventure is far more likely to be remembered then yet another Kobold or Goblin cave. There is a fear and excitement in the unknown. If possible have them drag their dead away. Their effect will be lessened if seeming endless numbers of them appear at regular intervals. I haven’t used them extensively in my own games, and so no interesting stories come to mind, but keep an eye on this blog, as they are sure to appear in future adventures of mine :).Ī few things to be careful of, do not over use Twig Blights, keep the mystery surrounding them as long as possible. Maybe the villain is using their minions to sustain and nurture a new Gulthias tree! To extend their use, or variety, maybe your Twig Blights grow bigger with age, increasing hit points and damage, of course only after having fed regularly :). The options are really endless.įinally, they are a really neat opportunity to explore a Evil Druid or Ranger villain, that perhaps utilizes Twig Blights and other Evil forest creatures to harass civilization. By the time they make it to the pasture all that remains is a trail of blood leading into the woods.Maybe a young child, as often happens in horror movies, can mention the funny wood men that skirt through the homestead late at night. All that the farmer hears over the bleating of the animal is an unsettling rustling and clattering, like dozens of claws rusting in the wind. Perhaps villagers have been complaining of animals disappearing when grazing near the forest, often at night. They are also quite creepy, and so can add an element of horror to early levels. Twig Blights are very level appropriate for a starting group AND avoid the repetition of yet another Goblin lair. Twig Blights offer a really interesting opportunity, low levels are often a ton of fun, and the most frequently played however, several creatures are often used as the main monsters Goblins, Orcs, Kobolds, ect. Twig Blights can root themselves into the ground and reproduce through their root system, allowing them to multiply even if the tree of their origins is slain. Most likely due to their dark origins Twig Blights crave the taste of blood, often attacking living creatures, and then drawing sustenance from their bodies. Twice a year fruit springs from the tree, the seeds of which create Twig Blights. The Gulthias Tree possessed innate, but evil, power. These strange creatures draw their origins from the Gulthias Tree, a tree grown from a stake used to slay a powerful vampire. Standing about 3 and 1/2 feet tall, Twig Blights are a series of leafless branches, which interlock to create a diminutive humanoid shape. While the specifics of the adventure are unimportant for this discussion, Twig Blights serve as a new henchmen of the big baddie at the end of the adventure. Twig Blights originally appeared in the 3rd edition adventure The Sunless Citadel. This will be a chance for me to focus on a specific monster, discuss my thoughts on it, share some stories, and suggest some interesting ways it can be used (or fought against).Ī shout out to the player of FizzyWinks for this first monster request! Good, who also joined the Furs in the aughts, is continually floored by Williams’ subtly radical twists on familiar solos, even in songs he didn’t record on - like “Sister Europe,” an early hit. He joined the band between 19, after The Waitresses disbanded, then again 2005 onward, patching things up after an acrimonious split. Jazz and rock saxophonist Mars Williams, far right, performs with American new wave band The Waitresses, comprised of, from left, bass guitarist Tracy Wormworth, lead singer Patty Donahue and keyboardist Dan Klayman on stage at The Peppermint Lounge in New York on Oct. “Mars Williams is one of the true saxophone players - someone who takes pleasure in the sheer act of blowing the horn (and there are not many saxophone players I can truthfully say this about),” Zorn wrote. He caught the ear of John Zorn, who wrote the liner notes to “Eftsoons,” a 1984 duo album with multi-instrumental tour de force Hal Russell - maybe Williams’ favorite album from his catalog to date. “That was a job,” he maintains, describing it in the same tone of voice as his stint at the sewage plant.) By then, Williams was going by “Mars,” inspired by his little brother’s lisping attempt to pronounce his name. (He doesn’t count his gig in the Playboy Club Band. “It really helped me with my own graphic scores,” Williams says.Īfter a brief jaunt out west to Colorado, Williams went to New York City to break into the live music scene there. Later, through Williams’ side gig as a copyist - for years, the B-flat edition of the Real Book, the classic jazz standards anthology, was transcribed in his hand - he linked up with Braxton, assisting with the composer’s sprawling graphic score, “Composition 96.” He met Mitchell at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York, and took immersive, hours-long lessons with him in Wisconsin. His real education came later, anyhow, studying with two of those once-unapproachable AACM greats. The plunge left Williams disillusioned with the stuffy conservatory training he’d chosen at DePaul University. Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Henry Threadgill and Roscoe Mitchell were all around. Back then, Williams could hear three AACM concerts in a single weekend. The South Side collective’s sonic explorations hugely inspired Williams’ own. Like the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Saxophonist Mars Williams performs at Steppenwolf Theatre during the LA/CHI/NY Traffic Series on Feb. So will some Furs: lead singer Richard Butler, drummer Zachary Alford and guitarist Rich Good, an especially close friend. Representatives from Guns N’ Roses and the Dave Matthews Band will be there. Liquid Soul, his funky, Grammy-nominated acid jazz outfit, is reuniting, with founding MC Jesse De La Peña spinning his own DJ set. 25 benefit show at Metro, featuring colleagues from all walks of Williams’ venturesome musical life. Until recently.Įarlier this year, Williams was diagnosed with ampullary cancer, a rare cancer affecting the area where the small intestine, bile duct and pancreatic duct meet. Twenty-five years on, he’s remained a strong contender for that title. “You won’t find a busier saxophonist in Chicago than Mars Williams,” the Chicago Reader declared in 1997. Here is a translation of this famous document from its French original:īeing without information as to whether you desire to see me, I send you nevertheless, monsieur, some interesting information, viz.: 1. The detailed documents that this letter announced as having been sent to the German Embassy, along with the original envelope of the initial "bordereau" letter were never found. It would appear from other disclosures that the letter was taken intact from the letter-box of Colonel Schwartzkoppen in the porter's lodge at the embassy, and brought to the office by an agent named Brucker, who had formerly acted as a go-between of Madame Bastian and French counter intelligence. The hand written text was present on both sides of the page.Īccording to the official version, which was long believed to be the true one, the paper had arrived by the usual means, through Madame Bastian but the appearance of the document, which was hardly torn, makes this story unlikely. It was unsigned and has since become uniquely celebrated under the name of the "bordereau." This list, written on so-called "papier pelure" (thin notepaper), ruled in squares and almost transparent, was torn from top to bottom in two places, but was otherwise intact. It was a handwritten list of potentially available and highly sensitive French military documents. It had been retrieved by French spy and cleaning lady Marie Bastian from the waste paper basket of the military attache at the German Embassy, Maximilian von Schwartzkoppen. Eventually, the conclusion was reached at high levels in the French General Staff that a traitor was passing on confidential military information to the German Embassy in Paris.ĭuring the summer of 1894 a document arrived at the French Counter Intelligence Office which was far more alarming than any which had preceded it. By this means it was ascertained that, since 1892, certain secret information concerning the national defense had leaked out. She put them all in a paper bag, and once or twice a month took them or had them taken to the "Section de Statistique." There the pieces were carefully fitted together and gummed. Madame Bastian carefully collected all the scraps of paper, torn up or half-burnt, which she found in the waste-paper baskets or in the fireplace of Schwartzkoppen's office. She was hired as a cleaning woman in the office of the German military attaché, Schwartzkoppen. However she was of Alsatian descent and spoke German fluently. Madame Bastian, wife of a soldier of the Republican Guard, was "a vulgar, stupid, completely illiterate woman about 40 years in age," according to her boss. To keep an eye on this plotting, the Counter Intelligence Office (the"Section de Statistique") secured the help of a cleaning lady employed at the German Embassy, a certain Marie Bastian. According to indications furnished by a former Spanish military attaché, Valcarlos, Schwartzkoppen and the Italian military representative, Colonel Panizzardi, had agreed to exchange the results of whatever discoveries they might make. However, it was known at the "Section de Statistique" that the new attaché, Maximilian von Schwartzkoppen, probably without the knowledge of the ambassador, continued to pay spies and was in direct correspondence with the War Office in Berlin. The ambassador, Count Münster, had promised on his word of honor that his attachés would abstain from bribing the French officers or officials. It watched the German embassy as one of its principal occupations. Blame was quickly pinned upon Alfred Dreyfus, a young French artillery officer who was in training within the French Army's general staff.Īmong the military services reorganized after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 was that of the French Counter Intelligence Department (disguised under the name of "Section de Statistique") led by a Lt Col Jean Conrad Sandherr. The Dreyfus Affair began when a bordereau (detailed memorandum) offering to procure French military secrets was recovered by French agents from the waste paper basket of Maximilian Von Schwartzkoppen, the military attaché at the German Embassy in Paris. |
